The Night House: Interviews with Rebecca Hall and David Bruckner

The scariest movies are the ones that aren’t really horror movies. Pure, psychological horror doesn’t need the supernatural to get under your skin. When a movie can make you question whether what is happening on screen is real or imagined, that is an achievement in storytelling. Searchlight Pictures’ new film The Night House is an example of just such a movie. (Read our review here!)

Here’s the plot:

A widow begins to uncover her recently deceased husband’s disturbing secrets.

I was lucky enough to sit down with director David Bruckner and star Rebecca Hall to discuss their new film. Bruckner and I discussed the inspiration for telling a story where a house plays a central role and the challenges to telling such a personal story. We talked about taking cues from the great novel House of Leaves as well as touched on his next project, the new take on Clive Barker’s Hellraiser.

Rebecca Hall needs no introduction and delivered one of my favorite performances of 2021 in The Night House. We talked about the daunting task of doing the bulk of this movie as the only person on screen coupled with her feelings about making a foray into horror.

The Night House opens in theaters on August 20th.
