A sequel to the Conjuring Universe entry The Nun (which you can get HERE) finally went into production last year, four years after the film earned $365 million at the global box office on a budget of $22 million. The Nun 2 is now heading toward a September 8th theatrical release – and with that date just two months away, Entertainment Weekly has gotten their hands on an image from the film that shows returning The Nun star Taissa Farmiga, surrounded by faceless evil spirits in nun habits! The image can be seen at the bottom of this article.

The Nun 2 is directed by Michael Chaves (The Curse of La LloronaThe Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It) from a screenplay by Akela Cooper (Malignant). The writing duo of Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing (The Autopsy of Jane Doe) also contributed to the script. The film has the following synopsis: 1956 – France. A priest is murdered. An evil is spreading. The sequel to the worldwide smash hit THE NUN follows SISTER IRENE as she once again comes face to face with the demonic force VALAK – THE DEMON NUN.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Chaves gave more information on the story, revealing that Sister Irene “living this anonymous life in this convent in Italy. She had this traumatic experience, this huge adventure, and now she wants to live the life of service.” Also returning from the first movie is the character Maurice (played by Jonas Bloquet), who is now possessed by the demon nun Valak. Chaves said, “Maurice made his way to France and he’s working at this boarding school as kind of a handyman. He has a friendship and a flirtation with one of the teachers there, and you can see him starting to mature, so that’s where our characters start out. But we know from the first film that there’s something terrible inside of him, that Valak escaped within him, and events pull Irene back on this collision course with her old friend.

Bonnie Aarons is back in the role of Valak. Farmiga, Bloquet, and Aarons are joined in the cast by Storm Reid (Euphoria), who plays a nun-in-training who joins Sister Irene on the mission to track down Maurice; child actress Katelyn Rose Downey (Clean Sweep), and Anna Popplewell, who is best known for playing the role of Susan Pevensie in the Chronicles of Narnia franchise. Popplewell plays Kate, “a school teacher at St. Mary’s School in France and a widowed, loving mother to 10-year-old Sophie”. We assume Downey is playing Sophie.

James Wan and Peter Safran are producing The Nun 2 through their Atomic Monster and The Safran Company banners.
