Leave it up to Fincher to twist and tweak right down to the last second…

Although principal photography has largely wrapped, Variety has it that “The O.C.” star Alan Dale (seen right) has been whisked to Sweden to join the cast of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. Word is Dale was called in to play a career detective on the verge of retirement.

Dale, who can currently be seen in theaters with DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK, has 60 acting credits to his name, many of which from TV. Dude’s done stints on “24”, “Lost”, “Ugly Betty”, “Entourage” and many others.

Adapted from Stieg Larsson’s bestseller by Steve Zaillian, One fateful day several years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared off the secluded island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger family. There was no corpse, no witnesses and no evidence. Nearly forty years later, investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) reluctantly accepts the unusual and seemingly unsolvable assignment of finding out what really happened to Harriet. Genius hacker, Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara) is drawn into the case and the two form a fragile alliance as they dig into the sinister past of the Vangers and find out just how far they’re prepared to go to protect themselves and each other.

Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig, Stellan Skarsgaard, Christopher Plummer, Robin Wright, Embeth Davidtz, Joely Richardson (below) and Steven Berkoff headline the stellar international cast.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATOO opens December 21st.
