TCL Theatres lists a rating for The Odyssey
We have yet to get the latest bulletin from the MPA in regards to newly announced movie ratings, but perhaps Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic, The Odyssey, has already received its rating? The movie’s page on the TCL Chinese Theatres website lists The Odyssey as Rated R. The website does not list the reasons that it has been branded with a restrictive label, but it wouldn’t be totally unfounded. Nolan’s last film, which garnered a ton of attention and gained a lot of accolades (including Academy Award love), was rated R due to some language and some sexual scenes.
For The Odyssey, we would be treated to battle scenes that are sure to feature many gruesome deaths, as well as mystical monsters like giants and a cyclops, who are likely to get violent. We will likely see soon if this is officially confirmed by the MPA.
Additionally, Universal has also released a new poster for Nolan’s epic, which showcases Odysseus squaring up against an army of giants. Check it out below.

Homer’s fantasy poem
The project has been building quite the mythic hype with it being the director’s most expensive film, which includes being shot entirely with IMAX cameras. Nolan’s take on the story stars Matt Damon, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Mia Goth, Zendaya, Elliot Page, John Leguizamo, Samantha Morton, Ryan Hurst, Logan Marshall-Green, Lupita Nyong’o, Josh Stewart, Benny Safdie, Corey Hawkins, and Elyes Gabel. The Odyssey is produced by Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan for their company, Syncopy. The executive producer is Thomas Hayslip.
The Odyssey is based on an ancient Greek poem by Homer that tells the tale of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his journey home after the ten-year Trojan War. The trip was perilous, including encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the witch-goddess Circe. At home, Odysseus is presumed dead, and his wife Penelope and son Telemachus must contend with groups of unruly suitors who each want Penelope’s hand in marriage to control the kingdom.
Filming took place in Morocco (Aït Benhaddou for Troy), Greece (Peloponnese, Pylos, Methoni Castle, Nestor’s Cave), Italy (Favignana, Aeolian Islands in Sicily), Scotland (Moray Firth coast, Findlater Castle), and Iceland. Favignana, Sicily’s “Goat Island” is “believed to be the place where Homer envisioned Odysseus landed with his motley crew to barbecue goats and stock up on food. The idyllic isle is part of the Egadi archipelago off of Sicily’s north-west coast.“
Universal showed off some incredible footage at this year’s CinemaCon. Our Chris Bumbray was in attendance and said that the preview “showed part of the Trojan Horse sequence. Crowds of people work to move the giant wooden horse onto the land, and we see Odysseus and his soldiers hiding inside and fighting for their lives so they don’t drown After being pulled into the city, they wait until night to launch their attack and invade Troy, all with Ludwig Göransson’s score building and building.”
The journey is due to hit theaters on July 17, 2026.
