The Furious has been hailed as one of the best action films of the year, and all eyes have been on what director Kenji Tanigaki would do next. According to THR, that moment has arrived. Tanigaki is officially set to direct The Reckoner, a brand-new original action flick written by John Wick creator Derek Kolstad—and it’s going to star Peter Dinklage. While Dinklage might not be the first name that comes to mind for hard-hitting, bone-crunching action, his involvement makes this project all the more intriguing.
What We Know About The Reckoner
Lionsgate (which snapped up The Furious after its stellar debut at TIFF) has closed a deal for The Reckoner, with Anthony and Joe Russo’s AGBO producing. Unfortunately, plot details are being kept under wraps for now, but hopefully, we can expect some hardcore fights and outrageous action.
“One of the most rewarding parts of what we do is discovering filmmakers with distinctive voices, bringing their work to wider theatrical audiences and partnering with them as they take on projects of greater scale and ambition,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president Erin Westerman. “That’s exactly what excites us about Kenji Tanigaki. The Furious showcases a singular filmmaking talent, and we’re thrilled to reunite with our friends at AGBO to bring his bold vision for The Reckoner to audiences worldwide.“
Russo-Otstot, AGBO’s chief creative officer, added, “Derek Kolstad and Peter Dinklage came to us with a world we hadn’t encountered before, original, action-packed and with genuine soul. The moment we saw what Kenji Tanigaki did with The Furious, his take on action so unique and engaging we knew immediately he was the only director who could take this vision and bring it to life. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be bringing this remarkable collection of talent together with Lionsgate, whose commitment to bold, character-driven filmmaking makes them the perfect partner for this project.“
You Should Watch The Furious
If you haven’t caught Tanigaki’s latest hit yet, now is the perfect time to catch up before The Reckoner drops.
The Furious stars Xie Miao as Wang Wei, a humble tradesman who is thrust into a deadly underworld of corruption and violence when his daughter Rainy is abducted. His only ally is Ravin (Joe Taslim), a relentless journalist haunted by his own past. Together, they fight their way through an international criminal network in a desperate bid to save Rainy and uncover the truth.
I haven’t had the chance to watch the film yet (I know!), but our own Chris Bumbray absolutely loved it. “While The Furious lacks the slick polish of the best recent South Korean, Chinese, or Indonesian action blockbusters, it makes up for it in sheer adrenaline and crowd-pleasing ferocity,” he wrote. “It’s the kind of movie designed for high-fives in the theatre, where you’ll find yourself grinning like an idiot as wave after wave of mayhem unfolds on screen. I had a killer time with it, and it feels like the kind of old-school action banger they used to churn out regularly during the heyday of Hong Kong action cinema.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.
