The star of the Annie remake could be an Academy Award nominee

With Willow Smith dropping out of the lead role in the ANNIE remake, there do not seem to be many known actresses in Hollywood who could tackle the lead at such a young age. But, there is one young lady who is up for an Academy Award for Best Actress who could fit the bill.

Entertainment Weekly reports that 9-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis is in contention for the lead role in Will Smith and Jay-Z’s update of ANNIE. The actress had an amazing debut in Best Picture nominee BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD and has the potential for a long career ahead of her.

ANNIE is apparently going for a different look and tone from the 1982 film starring Albert Finney and Carol Burnett. I assumed based on the producers that the movie would be taking a more hip-hop vibe rather than the Broadway appeal of the source material. But, ANNIE goes all the way back to the days of the comic strip Little Orphan Annie, which does appear very outdated for a 21st century adaptation. I mean, we aren’t talking LES MISERABLES here.

Anyone out there excited for a new ANNIE?
