Director Mark Meir‘s horror film The Summoned just screened at the Overlook Film Festival earlier this month, and XYZ Films quickly snatched up the distribution rights with the intention of getting the film out in North America as soon as they could. They’re planning to give The Summoned a VOD release on  July 7th, and with that date just over a week away a trailer for the film has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

Meir, making his feature directorial debut after racking up acting roles in things like Fear the Walking Dead and The Ice Cream Truck, directed The Summoned from a screenplay by Yuri Baranovsky, co-creator and co-star of the series Leap Year. The story centers on

young Elijah, who attends a self-help retreat with his rockstar girlfriend Lyn, unaware that the enigmatic doctor who runs the estate has summoned him here to settle a generations-old supernatural debt.

The film stars J. Quinton Johnson (Hamilton on Broadway), Emma Fitzpatrick (The Social Network), Salvador Chacon (Mayans M.C.), Angela Gulner (GLOW), and Freddy Douglas (The Odyssey).

The Summoned was a Wicked Myth and Happy Little Guillotine Studios co-production, and was produced by Baranovsky, Meir, Gulner, Justin Mark Morrison, and Dashiell Reinhardt.

James Emanuel Shapiro, XYZ Films’ Executive Vice President of US Distribution, said,

All I can say is that I felt summoned to work on The Summoned! Mark, Yuri, and Angela created something smart and scary, and I can’t wait to show this to as many people as possible!”

Meir added,

We are thrilled to have XYZ bring this film to audiences. As leaders in the genre space, we’re honored to be among their titles.”

Judging by the trailer, The Summoned looks to me like it could be interesting, so I’ll probably be watching the movie once it reaches VOD. What did you think of the trailer? Does this look like a movie you would want to watch? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
