I love the films of Terry Gilliam. In recent years he has toiled with lesser recognized films like TIDELAND, THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS, and the never completed THE MAN WHO KILLED DON QUIXOTE. But, this is also the man who gave us TIME BANDITS, TWELVE MONKEYS, THE FISHER KING, BRAZIL, and the underrated THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN. Gilliam’s disdain of the studio system has forced him to scrounge for every project he has tried to make but it finally looks like he is returning to his glory days of satire with THE ZERO THEOREM.
THE ZERO THEOREM stars Christoph Waltz as a man in a dystopian future who works as a computer programmer. His life is plagued with loneliness and angst which has led to all of his hair to fall out. An opportunity arises to work on a dead end project involving THE ZERO THEOREM which leads Waltz’s character on a surreal journey.
This trailer is an “In Production” reel for the film which looks remarkably complete. It also has a very European vibe to it as most of Gilliam’s work does. This does not feel like a studio film and yet also has the potential to be the best of Terry Gilliam‘s directorial efforts in a long time.
The cast looks amazing, especially Christoph Waltz who looks to be turning in yet another stellar performance. Alongside Waltz are Tilda Swinton, a kooky David Thewlis, a very sexy Melanie Thierry, and a bearded fellow who resembles Peter Stormare. IMDb also lists Matt Damon as Management which could be a nice cameo to round out this project.
THE ZERO THEOREM currently holds release dates in Italy and Russia towards the end of the year, so hopefully we get a domestic release sometime in 2014.
