Gotta hand it to them, the folks behind THE PURGE picked a good year to wrap up (?) their franchise. It’s likely you’ve heard there’s an election going on in the U.S. in 2016, as such the latest collaboration from James DeMonaco, Platinum Dunes and Blumhouse Productions is THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR. The new trailer has premiered and is embedded below; the first teaser poster is up too. Oddly enough, the film looks like it combines the home invasion elements of the first one with the chaos-in-the-streets aesthetic of the second. But does it take the opportunity to make a subversive political commentary of any kind? We’ll find out in July.

It’s been two years since Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) stopped himself from a regrettable act of revenge on Purge Night.  Now serving as head of security for Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), his mission is to protect her in a run for president and survive the annual ritual that targets the poor and innocent.  But when a betrayal forces them onto the streets of D.C. on the one night when no help is available, they must stay alive until dawn…or both be sacrificed for their sins against the state.

THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR stars Frank Grillo, Elizabeth Mitchell, Mykelti Williamson, Raymond J. Barry and Edwin Hodge. It opens July 1st.
