Only days before it debuts its fifth season, "The Walking Dead" is already shambling ahead to the future. To the surprise of perhaps no one, AMC has officially renewed the zombie drama for a sixth season. Scott M. Gimple will return as the showrunner.

Said AMC President Charlie Collier:

We could not be more excited for October 12 as we share new episodes of The Walking Dead with fans around the globe… In advance of Sunday’s season five premiere, AMC proudly confirms a sixth season order of this extraordinary series. Thank you to Robert Kirkman, Scott Gimple, the terrific executive producers, and the entire team who brings this compelling world and these rich characters to life. There’s plenty more Dead ahead thanks to their impressive, collective effort.”

"The Walking Dead" will live on in more ways than one. A spin-off series is currently being prepped by the network, with plans on airing it sometime next year. The season premiere of Season 5 goes down on October 12th.
