The long-in-development MANIAC COP remake from Nicolas Winding Refn (whose NEON DEMON will strike this summer) finally scored its funding! In yet another Cannes coup, Refn's Space Rocket and Wild Bunch have partnered with Vendian Entertainment for a first-look deal that will last for several years. The first product that will be produced and funded under this deal will be MANIAC COP, from director John Hyams (UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: DAY OF RECKONING).

Not only that, the remake is said to be the first of a trilogy. It's cool enough that MANIAC COP (a worthy late-period slasher with room for improvement) is getting a remake, but could you imagine another MANIAC COP III: BADGE OF SILENCE? I'm not saying that's the direction they're taking this, but we're now living in a world where that's a possibility.

The screenplay, written by Ed Brubaker (CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR), is based on the story of the original 1988 film, with an important gender switch:

It follows innocent people who are brutally murdered on the streets of Los Angeles by a uniformed police officer. As the death toll rises and LAPD attempts a cover up, one determined female cop sets out to reveal the truth.

The film will shoot in Los Angeles this Summer.
