With the release of 25 Empire covers for the upcoming X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, several questions have arisen. The biggest, based on the images, surrounds the two different designs for the Sentinel robots. The old, Dyson vacuum design we have seen so far is now complimented by a sleek, black, future version that looks like it is made up of numerous little plates of some kind. The design looks cool and very different from the Sentinels we have seen in the comics or animated series, so what exactly is the thought behind the new design?
Within the Empire cover story, production designer John Myhre gave some insight into the new Sentinel.
“They’re biomechanical weapons. We had to come up with what would be the ultimate version that could actually, in principle, stop the X-Men. We started with this idea that they were almost made up of magnetic plates slapped over one another, imagining that the plates could contract or grow, so the Sentinel can be skinny to get through a small space or the plates can open up to become a bigger shape. So they have become virtually unstoppable.”
I was lukewarm to the purple Sentinel design, but this black one is a scary motherf*cker on the static page. I can only imagine how it will look on the big screen. These covers definitely get me excited for X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, even if the Quicksilver design is a little goofy. But, he is from the past, right?
X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST hits theaters on May 23, 2014.
