Deadline reports that Starboard Entertainment has acquired the North American distribution rights to Mark Pellington’s music-driven documentary feature This Is Buzz, which looks back at the cult MTV series Buzz. The specifics of their release plans have not yet been announced, but we do know that the movie will get a theatrical release sometime in June, followed by a digital release.

Details

This Is Buzz is described as an experiential music-driven documentary that examines the radical impact and lasting relevance of Buzz, an influential MTV series from the 1990s.

As for Buzz, it was a non-linear current affairs show. The show had a brief run on MTV but has become a cult classic in recent years, with younger generations discovering episodes online. Notable contributors and subjects featured in the original series include William S. Burroughs, Jenny Holzer, Jaron Lanier, Malcolm McLaren, Timothy Leary, and William Gibson. RuPaul served as the host of Buzz in his first recurring television appearance.

The show was created in 1990 by Jon Klein and Mark Pellington.

This Is Buzz is presented by Starboard Entertainment and produced by Pellington’s Prolific Films, Kiln Pictures, Backstroke, Imaginary Film Content, and Orange Crush. Pellington has written and directed the documentary, and produced it alongside Liza Hughes and Eb George, with Ted Hope, Thomas Zambeck, Paul Rachman, Chris Gore, Adam Abdalla, Jax DeLuca, Eric Kohn, Judy McGrath, Kevin McLeod, Jon Klein, Willie Williams, Eileen Richardson, and Josh Braun serving as executive producers. Ian Tellechea is a co-producer.

Statement

Pellington provided the following statement: “This Is Buzz is about youthful spirit, art, and experimentation, a punk rock film about independence, a story of a future ominously predicted and then destroyed and forgotten. Until now.

I watched a lot of MTV in the ’90s and have no memory of Buzz, so this documentary will be an interesting reminder.

In addition to Buzz and This Is Buzz, Pellington’s directing credits include Going All the Way, Arlington Road, The Mothman Prophecies, U2 3D, Henry Poole Is Here, I Melt with You, The Last Word, Nostalgia, The Severing, Survive, episodes of Blindspot, Star Trek: Short Treks, The Enemy Within, Red Widow, Cold Case, and Homicide: Life on the Streets, and a whole lot of music videos.
