Back in 1997, SPAWN was released and disappointed fans of the comic book by trying too hard to be a superhero movie instead of a horror story featuring a superhero character. While I enjoyed the movie for what it was, including a great turn by John Leguizamo, SPAWN just fell flat. We have been hoping for a long time to get a better movie version of the character on the big screen and that time may be fast approaching.
Back in February, SPAWN creator Todd McFarlane touted he was working on a new script and that several Academy Award-winning actors were very interested in starring. We haven’t heard much since then, but McFarlane now has a more concrete timeframe in mind for when we can expect to see the new SPAWN:
“[The producers] want me to deliver the script by the end of the year,” he said, “which would basically mean we’d be shooting next year. So, that’s the goal right now.”
A 2014 production would likely mean a 2015 release for the SPAWN sequel/reboot. That would put the movie smack in the middle of one of the most crowded movie years of all time. Could SPAWN hold a candle opposite any of the big superhero movies coming out, let alone the next STAR WARS? Would any studio be willing to pony up the bucks for a sequel to a movie that didn’t deliver on it’s budget the first time? McFarlane says they wouldn’t need a lot of dough.
“I think it’s a quick shoot,” McFarlane explained. “It’s not going to be a giant budget with a lot of special effects, it’s going to be more of a horror movie and a thriller movie, not a superhero one. I’ve got so many people phoning now that I’ve got to get it done. I’ve made some promises to people this year.”
Less money, more horror, and famous names interested? Count me in. The root of SPAWN has always been the horror and the supernatural, not the caped crusader from hell that the 1997 version portrayed. I hope they do make something with a smaller focus and bring to life what made the comic book great.
