Which Academy Award winning actor is attached to play Spawn in the upcoming reboot?

Interesting news comes to us from MTV Geek today in the way of the SPAWN reboot.

The network blog caught up with creator Todd McFarlane at Toy Fair 2013 to discuss the upcoming film. McFarlane says that there is an Academy Award winning actor just waiting to get a script on the project:

I continue to write a page here and there… we’ve got a guy waiting in the sidelines who’s an Academy Award winning actor who phones every three weeks going “Todd, where’s the script? Where’s the script?”

Of course, McFarlane won’t tell who it is, even though we can pretty much narrow it down ourselves.

He came out to the office, he gave me his pitch, I gave him my pitch and he was like “Huh? Fine, let’s do your gig” and the pitch I gave him was that we could then do ten of these for the next ten years and he didn’t have to be 22 for the rest of his life.

From that we can assume that whomever it is, is an actor who is concerned about aging with the series. Does that mean he’s a younger actor? Here’s the list of possibilities within the correct age range: Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Jamie Foxx, and Cuba Gooding Jr. Who can we cross out? I’m going to say everyone but Cuba Gooding Jr. That was almost too easy…

Although the movie may be coming along slowly (which is good), a new animated series seems to be going full steam:

The plan would be to do the movie, bring the movie out and then go back on TV with the animation like we did the first time… we’ve got 90 minutes all set, ready to go, other than just sending it to an animation house. We’ve done all the voice recordings, we’ve done all the backgrounds…

SPAWN was one of my first comic loves as a kiddo. One of the best gifts I ever received was the HBO animated series box set. So yes, the film that came out back in 1997 was a complete letdown. But it also exposed me to the awesomeness that is Michael Jai White. I think it deserves a good movie. Will this be it? I can’t say.
