You’d think with Steve Rogers, Red Skull, Bucky Barnes and Peggy Carter all cast for CAPTAIN AMERICA that all the big roles have already been filled. But if today’s rumor turns out to be true, there’s still one major character yet to be cast. UGO is reporting that Tommy Lee Jones is in negotiations to star in CAPTAIN AMERICA in an unnamed role. If I may, I’d like to speculate a little further on this rumor to see exactly who he’d be playing…
While I’d hate to say anything with 100% certitude, I’d bet dollars to donuts that Jones would be playing General Chester Phillips, the Army commander who handpicks Rogers for the Super Soldier program. In the comics, Phillips oversaw the training of Rogers as Captain America and even accompanied him on some earlier missions. In other words, it seems like a part perfect for someone like Tommy Lee Jones.
Of course this is all just speculation and even UGO qualifies their report by saying that it’s a rumor. But it’s a rumor that makes a fair deal of sense and should Jones be able to schedule it alongside MEN IN BLACK 3D, which is also filming this summer, could be news we hear confirmed in the coming days…
