Transylvania Animation

It’s hard to make a really good horror-themed animated flick for kids, as only a few out there are worth seeing, and even a smaller few are actually good. They don’t get much better than THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, although MONSTER HOUSE wasn’t bad either (not as good as NIGHTMARE, but good none-the-less).


It looks like Sony Pictures Animation, those f*cks behind the upcoming OPEN SEASON, are hoping to make a horror themed animated feature that will have people lining up in droves to check out. Ok, so it’s not hardcore horror, and it most likely won’t be scary- it’s a comedy, but still… it sounds like it could be good.


HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA will tell the tale of classic ‘Universal’ monsters Dracula, The Mummy, The Werewolf and Frankenstein’s Monster, as they stay in a hotel in Transylvania. See, they’re hiding out because they’re worried that, due to the onslaught of technology, nobody finds them scary anymore.


Can’t tell if the title’s supposed to be like the Eagle’s classic ‘Hotel California’, which talked about being in drug rehab, or if that’s just a silly coincidence. Either way, count me in!


The craziest part? Sony has already budgeted the project for over $100 million! That’s a lot of clams for a ‘cartoon’! I hope to hell it pays off- mostly because I like to see anything horror related succeed (even crap like WHEN A STRANGER CALLS felt good when it debuted at #1). HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA is set to be released sometime in 2009. Yes, you read that right- 2009.
