Trent Reznor calls scoring Netflix’s Bird Box a f*cking waste of time

Last year, director Susanne Bier and screenwriter Eric Heisserer's (ARRIVAL) adaptation of author Josh Malerman's horror-thriller BIRD BOX hit Netflix. The film starred Sandra Bullock, Trevante Rhodes, and John Malkovich, and has since become – for lack of a better term – a phenomenon.

But today NIN frontman and composer Trent Reznor got frank about his work on BIRD BOX, saying the movie was a waste of time:

When we got immersed in it, it felt like some people were phoning it in. And you’re stuck with a film editor who had real bad taste. That’s kind of our barricade to getting stuff in the film. And the final icing on the shit cake was we were on tour when they mixed it. And they mixed the music so low, you couldn’t hear it anyway. So it was like, that was a … [laughs] That was a fucking waste of time. Then we thought, no one’s going to see this fucking movie. And, of course, it’s the hugest movie ever in Netflix.

Truth time: I had no idea Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross provided the score for BIRD BOX.

The Netflix film followed this synopsis:

When a mysterious force decimates the population, only one thing is certain — if you see it, you die. The survivors must now avoid coming face to face with an entity that takes the form of their worst fears. Searching for hope and a new beginning, a woman and her children embark on a dangerous journey through the woods and down a river to find the one place that may offer sanctuary. To make it, they'll have to cover their eyes from the evil that chases them — and complete the trip blindfolded.

BIRD BOX is directed by Susanne Bier from a screenplay written by Eric Heisserer (ARRIVAL) based on the book of the same name by Josh Malerman. Chris Morgan, Barbara Muschietti (STEPHEN KING'S IT), Scott Stuber, Dylan Clark, and Clayton Townsend produced. Bullock's costars include Trevante Rhodes, John Malkovich, Lil Rel Howery, Jacki Weaver, BD Wong, and Sarah Paulson. The movie is now streaming on Netflix.
