A year and a half ago, we heard that Roar Uthaug – director of Cold Prey, The Wave, and the Alicia Vikander version of Tomb Raider – was taking the helm of a Norwegian-language monster movie called Troll for the Netflix streaming service. Now Netflix has released a teaser trailer for Troll, and you can check that out in the embed above. The streamer has not yet announced a release date for the film.

Troll has the following synopsis:

Deep inside the mountain of Dovre, something gigantic awakens after being trapped for a thousand years. Destroying everything in its path, the creature is fast approaching the capital of Norway. But how do you stop something you thought only existed in Norwegian folklore?

When Troll was first announced, Uthaug said the film is

an idea that has been developing in the back of my mind for over 20 years. To finally be able to realize it with the enthusiastic and ambitious people at Netflix and Motion Blur is truly a dream come true. I can’t wait to unleash this Norwegian monster on the world.”

The trailer does make the troll seem like quite a badass creature, describing it as being made of earth and stones, with a snowclad heart and icy bones. Plus it’s massive. Kaiju size! I will be definitely be watching this movie whenever Netflix releases it. I’m glad to see the director of Cold Prey having this level of success because I really liked that Norwegian slasher movie.

It’s interesting to note that, while several of Uthaug’s movies have received sequels, he hasn’t directed any of them. The Cold Prey follow-ups, the sequel to his fantasy film Magic Silver, The Wave sequel The Quake, and the upcoming Tomb Raider sequel were all handed over to different directors. If Troll kicks off a franchise, will Uthaug stick around this time or move on again?

Does Troll look like a movie you would want to watch? Share your thoughts on the trailer by leaving a comment below.
