Turistas Scribe Talks

The boys over at had a chance to chat it up with TURISTAS writer Michael Ross this morning, and he gave some interesting insight as to not only the process that took place for this project to get off the ground, but what it was like filming on location in Brazil.

Even more interesting was what he had to say about horror movies in general, and what makes these movies scary. Check it: There’s not really a model for what makes something scary, I think it’s just how involving it is for the viewer. Just because there’s a ghost and creepy images doesn’t meant it’s going to be scary. There are so many elements labeled as being responsible for all the good scary movies instead of actual quality filmmaking.

I sure hope someone high up is paying attention, because crap like and are both prime examples of movies relying on scary images to be scary… and both obviously falling short of the mark. Ross makes an excellent point about involving the audience as well, as that just doesn’t stop with horror movies but movies, because if you don’t care about the characters… you don’t care about the movie. Some movies get that… and some don’t.

To check out the entire interview, including what it was like working with director John Stockwell, go ahead and click , and watch for TURISTAS in theaters everywhere December 1st.
