Uh oh…another TWILIGHT book? And inevitable follow up movie? Lord help us!

Yet it could be true folks. Word has it the net today that TWILIGHT author Stephenie Meyer has penned a spinoff novella entitled “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner,” which will be released in the not so distant future. No word of cinematic adaptation has crossed the wire, but such a development is about as predictable as sunrise. Don’t ya think?!?

Told from the point of view of the titular character, “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner” is an offshoot of a character (played by Jodelle Ferland) introduced in TWILIGHT: ECLIPSE. It’s the first work Meyer’s had published in nearly two years, running at a brisk 192 pages. Word is the book’ll hit stands on June 5th, 2010 (in hardcover, for $13.99), with one dollar from each book sold being donated to The Red Cross International Response Fund.

About the novel, Meyer had this to say:

“I’m as surprised as anyone about this novella. When I began working on it in 2005, it was simply an exercise to help me examine the other side of Eclipse, which I was editing at the time. I thought it might end up as a short story that I could include on my website. Then, when work started on The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide, I thought the Guide would be a good fit for my Bree story. However, the story grew longer than I anticipated, until it was too long to fit into the Guide.”

Okay then.

Two days after the book’s release, Meyer is paying special thanks to fans through a website called BreeTanner.com, where from June 7th-July 5th, fans can read the novella online (in English).

Published by Little, Brown Books for young Readers – The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner is the riveting story of Bree Tanner, a newborn vampire first introduced in Eclipse, and the darker side of the world she inhabits. The novella chronicles the newborn vampire army’s journey as they prepare to close in on Bella Swan and the Cullens, following their encounter to its unforgettable conclusion.

The character Bree not only features prominently in the book Eclipse, but in the upcoming movie from Summit Entertainment.

“Stephenie was gracious enough to let me read a draft of the novella while we were prepping the movie THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE,” said director David Slade. “I thoroughly enjoyed the story and it gave us great insight and inspired location choices and the tailoring of scenes. I think fans are going to love the fascinating details involved in the loves, fears and actions of an emerging vampire.”

And that’s it for now. I don’t even know where to begin with talk-back topics, so do me a favor and go buck-wild below!

Why couldn’t the book be a spinoff of this one’s character?
