Twilight’s Kellan Lutz cast as lead in Renny Harlin’s Hercules 3D

The Renny Harlin directed HERCULES 3D has now found its Hercules in TWILIGHT and IMMORTALS star Kellan Lutz. Best known for his role as Emmett Cullen in Stephenie Meyer’s infamous series of films, the actor has also mostly been cast in roles that cash in on his physique more so than his acting chops. I will say, however, that he was quite good in the underrated IMMORTALS, where he played Poseidon.  Harlin is confident in Lutz, though, saying:

“It takes more than a good physique to portray the most legendary, mythological personality in history — and Kellan has exactly that, personality. He’s not afraid to explore the strengths and vulnerabilities of the character, and he impressed me with his passion and heart.”

No official synopsis has been released for the film, which is competing with Brett Ratner‘s HERCULES film starring Dwayne Johnson as the titular God, but it “will have at its center a love story between the son of Zeus and the mortal princess of Crete, who was promised to his older brother despite her love for Hercules.”

I think Lutz can pull off HERCULES 3D without a hitch, but if we could successfully merge both competing projects and have Harllin directing Johnson as the character I’d be much more excited. However, I am happy to see Harlin back in big-budget fare and am hoping for a a rollicking good time.

HERCULES 3D is set to start filming in May with a release sometime in March 2014, beating Ratner’s pic, which hits in August 2014.
