Genre flicks made and released by Troma Entertainment are a mixed bag. You can get something really cool… or you can get a steaming pile of donkey dicks–you’re chances are about 50/50.
Therefore Troma’s DVD release of DEAD EYES OPEN and HEAVY MENTAL, both hitting shelves this August, means one thing: one will be awesome, and one will be unwatchable. Which one is which? You gotta check ’em both out to find out.
DEAD EYES OPEN is the chilling account of a vacation gone terribly wrong when an adventurous group of friends find themselves stranded in the German countryside and under the attack of violent, bloodthirsty zombies. Their urgent search for help takes them to a fortress in the woods where they learn that the real horror has only just begun.
Basically if you love zombies, you might like this movie. Plus, the great George A. Romero shows up in a cameo appearance–you gotta like that! Oh, and it’s all in German. Put that bit of info in your pipe and smoke it.
The other flick’s called HEAVY MENTAL, from the director of DETROIT BLOOD CITY, and it goes a little something like this: Ace Spade, garage band superstar, has just been given the guitar of the late Godfather of Heavy Metal, Eddie Lee Stryker. Eddie’s ghost possesses the instrument and is hell-bent on avenging his death at the hands of the smoldering and sinister Mrs. Delicious and her gang of groupies. When Eddie imbues Ace with his power, Ace becomes a giant metal monster, capable of shredding all his opponents, including the deviant Delicious.
That sounds… fantastic. It really does. Not sure which one’s gonna be garbage and which one’s gonna be gold, but I’m down to find out. No extras are mentioned to accompany the respective DVDs, but that’s ok. You don’t pick up movies like this for the extras.
PRE-ORDER YOUR COPY OF DEAD EYES OPEN then PRE-ORDER YOUR COPY OF HEAVY MENTAL, and get ready for a double feature of epic proportions when both films hit DVD shelves everywhere August 31, 2010.
