The past 48 hours have been a bit of a rough go for Star Trek fans. First, STAR TREK BEYOND lost its chance to snag a much-deserved award for Best Makeup & Hair Styling at the 87th Academy Awards to David Ayer's SUICIDE SQUAD, and now, it's being reported that the much-anticipated television show STAR TREK: DISCOVERY has been delayed. It's a real bummer, I know.
For now, CBS is moving its plans to launch the bold new series in the late Summer or Early Fall, according to Leslie Moonves, chief executive of CBS Corp. In his update regarding the interstellar series reboot, Moonves stated, "The new series required a lot of production. It's important to get it right, and Star Trek is the family jewels. There are million of Trekkies out there. We know for a fact that the other versions of ‘Star Trek’ — there were seven other series, some of them were great and some of them were terrible — they all did really well on Netflix. That gave us great confidence that this was the right choice to put the full court press on ‘All Access."
Truthfully, this seems fair. I'd rather the powers that be take their time getting this project up to snuff rather than rush it out the cargo bay door. There's no doubt in my mind that STAR TREK: DISCOVERY will be under a laser-focused microscope by fans of the long-running franchise, so the more attention paid to detail the better, I say. After all, we've been waiting for this show to hit for long enough, so it stands to reason that a little more time won't put a Vulcan nerve pinch on our calendars by any stretch.
