Universal Studios has taken legal action against direct to DVD studio The Asylum over their unauthorized version of BATTLESHIP.
If you are unfamiliar with The Asylum, that likely means your movie taste has some level of quality standards. They are known for churning out fare that is so low budget that it makes SyFy original movies look like AVATAR. They also capitalize on the marketing from major studios to trick renters into checking our their thinly veiled knock-offs. You would have to be a true idiot to confuse TRANSMORPHERS for TRANSFORMERS, but THE TERMINATORS only adds that one letter. They also have made movies called ALMIGHTY THOR and ABRAHAM LINCOLN VS ZOMBIES. Classy people.
Well it seems that Universal, who is likely already a bit concerned about how well BATTLESHIP might perform at the box office, is not liking The Asylum’s AMERICAN BATTLESHIP set for release 4 days after BATTLESHIP hits theaters on May 18th. The fact that there has been no significant legal action against The Asylum before this goes to show that other studios were less concerned with the overall performance of the genuine product.
Universal is suing for “unspecified damages” and claims they have sole rights to making the film version of the board game of the same name. It remains to be seen if anything will prevent AMERICAN BATTLESHIPS from hitting Redbox and Netflix on May 22nd.
