Universal’s Nightmare

If A NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST. spelled ‘good times’ to you because of the whole aspect of dreams effecting your reality, then the newly purchased NIGHTMARE ACADEMY should have you foaming at the mouth. And since Universal just paid mucho dollars to own the rights, it should be nothing less than fantastic!

Written originally as the first part of a trilogy of novels by Dean Lorey (executive producer of ‘Arrested Development’), NIGHTMARE ACADEMY is about a young boy who learns his nightmares open a portal for creatures in his dreams to come into the real world. Lorey will also write the screenplay, and Stephen Sommers (THE MUMMY) is looking to produce.

The concept could go to many cool places here, and show us plenty of stuff we’ve yet to see. My only hiccup is the fact that it’s protagonist is a kid, which would lead me to believe that it’s more of a kids movie ala ZATHURA or JUMANJI. Not that those movies weren’t fun, but let’s face it… they’re for kids. And horror movies for kids just aren’t scary, and lack the flow of ‘red stuff’.

But as Sommers has been behind some fun movies in the past (all entertaining as hell, even if they lacked everywhere else), I think I’ll stay optimistic about this one, as the concept sounds pretty cool. Stick around, as more on NIGHTMARE ACADEMY (like who’ll be directing) will surely hit in the next few weeks.
