Variety reports this morning that Mark Pellington, who also directed the hallucinary mind-trip THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES, has signed a deal with Universal Pictures to direct another trippy thriller based on a short story by Ken Kalfus.
The flick’s called NIGHT AND DAY YOU ARE THE ONE, otherwise known as A TITLE THAT’S WAY TOO LONG AND SHOULD BE CUT BEFORE RELEASE, and it goes a little something like this: [the story] follows a man who can’t tell the difference between his dreams and reality. When he witnesses a murder, he must unravel truth from fantasy.
If that doesn’t spell ‘mind-f*ck’, I don’t know what does! Just thinking about that idea is trippin’ me out! Seriously, movies dealing with ‘is it a dream or is it reality’ have this unique position to mess with your mind, as you can never really tell if what they’re showing you is real or if it’s a dream. A NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST. is a classic example, as is JACOB’S LADDER and eXistenZ (which, to this day, still has me questioning reality).
Jon Bokenkamp adapted NIGHT AND DAY for the screen, with genre writer Ehren Kruger (THE RING) and Daniel Bobker producing. No word on who they’ll cast as of yet, but stick around as it’s only a matter of time. Bring on the NIGHT!
