Things were seemed to be going swimmingly for the VACATION reboot starring Ed Helms as Rusty Griswold and Christina Applegate to play the wife, but now it seems that they are at a halt.
The flick was set to shoot this July in Atlanta. However, that won’t happen if creative differences can’t be settled. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the debate is over, “some wanting to make a broader, PG-13 movie while others want to keep it R-rated, like the original. One source says the delay will last only a few months, but others say the movie could be pushed to later this year.”
Not sure who was in favor of which ratings. I’d say that writer-directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein were in favor of the R, while Warner Bros. and New Line (who will greenlight) might have wanted to reach out to different age ranges. Everything apparently came to a head on Friday.
Obviously if you are going to take a trip with Russ and family, you’ve got to make it R. But then again when I think about it, you do want to reach out to new audiences. Maybe it will give the younger generation incentive to want to check out the older installments with Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo. This is definitely a toss up for me.
