Venom: Let There Be Carnage ties Shang-Chi for fastest film to $100 million during the pandemic era

Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Venom 2, Shang-Chi, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Box office

Venom: Let There Be Carnage began its impressive box office run with a pandemic-best $90 million debut over the weekend and now it has reached another milestone that it’s sharing with another solid box office performer.

The Venom sequel ties Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings for the fastest film to reach $100 million domestically during the pandemic era. Per “Deadline“, both films reached this feat in five days but Venom’s road to this benchmark can be viewed as slightly more impressive. Venom 2 got to $100 million in five days without the benefit of a holiday while Shang-Chi was boosted by its Labor Day weekend rush. Also impressive is that Venom: Let There Be Carnage beat its predecessor by one day as it took 2018’s Venom six days to reach $100 million. The industry is continuing to buzz about Venom’s pandemic box office performance because it’s a strong sign that moviegoing is so very close to being back to normal. These milestones only add to their enthusiasm.

What we don’t know right now is what kind of legs Venom: Let There Be Carnage will have. Shang-Chi had remarkable legs following its robust opening weekend but the film had virtually no competition during the month of September as it was the only game in town. Venom: Let There Be Carnage faces immediate competition this weekend from No Time To Die followed by Halloween Kills the following weekend and then Dune the weekend after that. October is certainly crowded with high-profile releases and only time will tell if there is room for all of them. That being said, I honestly think Venom: Let There Be Carnage will see $200 million domestic by the end of its run, a feat that Shang-Chi accomplished as the first film to do so during the pandemic era. Will Venom be second? Will No Time To Die have a bigger start to reach that feat faster? It really is turning into an exciting time at the box office.
