Will Fast Forever finally start filming? Vin Diesel says it kicks off in December

Fast Forever to finally get off the starting line?

Fast Forever seemed to be taking forever to get going. The previous entry in the Fast & Furious franchise, Fast X, was released in 2023 and ended on a cliffhanger. There would be news about the follow-up entry without any real action taking place since then. There had been some false flags lately when Vin Diesel would seemingly post videos from the production, but that would prove not to be the case. There had been reports that the attached director, Louis Leterrier, hadn’t seen a script yet, despite Diesel stating that he had read it and it was the best script he’d read in a long time. He even revealed that he cried after reading it.

Ready. Set. Go!

Variety caught up with Diesel at the 25th anniversary screening of The Fast and the Furious, and the producer and star seems to finally have a start date finally pinned down. He told Variety,

We start shooting in December, if I can make good on the request from the studio. I’m in a good place, though. I had to go through four sets of writers, four years of development, to get to something that I felt would be worthy of a finale. And when I read the script a couple of weeks ago, [I cried].”

Diesel would also say a few words to the attendees just before the movie started rolling. He told the audience,

I’m going to tell you something personal. It was after four different writers, four years of development, and after I read the script, halfway through, one tear. By the end of the script that we crafted and worked so hard to make right for you after four years, I was crying. I couldn’t hold it back, and I had to tell everyone. And my sister said, ‘No more crying, bro.’ So I just want to say that sometimes, even the toughest guys in the world need to cry.”

Fast Forever too expensive?

We will see if Diesel can make the start date happen as when he revealed the news, he did include the caveat, “If I can make good on the request of the studio.” So, his update might have to be taken with a grain of salt for now. His co-star Alan Ritchson, who aims to be transparent in interviews, revealed that the cost of the movie has been the biggest holdup. Ritchson recently said on The Happy Sad Confused podcast, “I know a lot, we have conversations all the time, I’m a big part of those conversations. There’s just a lot of obstacles. It’s expensive to make— it’s too expensive; it doesn’t make a ton of sense. There’s a more efficient way to shoot those shows. And so there has to be a way to show restraint, while also honoring the fact that this world has expanded to something humongous. We are at the crossroads of something very hard to figure out, and everybody’s figuring it out.“

Despite the struggles, Ritchson is confident that Fast Forever will happen, one way or another. “There’s going to be another one, and I think it’s going to be great,” he said. “It’s just a matter of solving some big problems.“
