The simply strange news that Walter Hill had boarded a remake of the trash-classic WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? hit back in early July, but no further updates had made themselves available. Purists may have hoped that the project had fallen apart, but today’s update will squash those dreams.
Deadline.com reports that Lakeshore Entertainment will produce and finance BABY JANE; Lakeshore Entertainment’s Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi will be producing along with The Aldrich Company’s Adell Aldrich. (Robert Aldrich directed the 1962 original.)
Lakeshore has been behind a number of horror projects in the past few years, including the UNDERWORLD series and the upcoming I, FRANKENSTEIN, starring Aaron Eckhart. They also gifted us with the CRANK pictures.
WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE is a
tale that almost redefines sibling rivalry. Faded actresses Blanche and ‘Baby’ Jane Hudson live together; Jane was by far the most famous when she performed with their father in vaudeville but as they got older, it was Blanche who became the finer actress, which Jane still resents. Blanche is now confined to a wheelchair – Jane ran her over with the car while drunk, even though she has no memory of it – and Jane is firmly in control. As time goes by, Jane exercises greater and greater control over her sister, intercepting her letters and ensuring that few if anyone from the outside has any contact with her. As Jane slowly loses her mind, she torments her sister going to ever greater extremes.
