Warren Beatty’s Howard Hughes film Rules Don’t Apply releases new trailer

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Howard Hughes is an intriguing figure. Not only did he get the lavish, big-budget biopic treatment from none other than Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio in THE AVIATOR (also co-starring Alec Baldwin in a supporting role), but even Christopher Nolan himself wanted to get in on that Hughes action at some point . And it's easy to see why: Hughes was a fascinating contradiction. He was both the shining example of rough-and-tumble masculinity and intelligence, while also at the same time dealing with crippling anxiety and paranoia.

Well, apparently there's a new Hughes film on the way titled RULES DON'T APPLAY, this time from DICK TRACY director Warren Beatty Let's have a look:

There's certainly a lot going on. But one thing's for certain: this is definitely a much different beast than THE AVIATOR. For one, the film actually focuses on Hughes' ambitious driver, played by future Han Solo Alden Ehrenreich, instead of the man himself. There also seems to be a sublot of Ehrenreich's driver falling in love with one of Hughes' (creepy) stable of young actresses played by Lily Collins. This plot point alone shows another main difference: while more comedic in tone, it also looks like it will dig deeper into Hughes' contradictions, neuroses, and personal failings (to be fair AVIATOR was far from a hagiography, but it was still a romanticized view of the man), which to me makes it look really interesting. Also I'm a sucker for anything dealing with Old School Hollywood (similar to my love HAIL! CAESER, which was my – and many people's – first introduction to Ehrenreich). So I'm definitely in.

RULES DON'T APPLY, also starring Annette Bening, Alec Baldwin, and Ed Harris, will finally be released November 23rd, 2016.
