Wednesday, Danny Elfman, Tim Burton, Netflix

Danny Elfman has signed a contract that will find him getting creepy and kooky for Netflix’s Wednesday Addams series. Per the deal, Elfman will compose the theme and original score for Wednesday, Tim Burton’s upcoming series for Netflix and MGM Television. Elfman joins Chris Bacon for the project.

Burton’s off-the-wall live-action series is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy. In the show, Wednesday attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore. Jenna Ortega (The Babysitter: Killer QueenScreamYes Day) will star as the raven-haired brother torturer, Wednesday Addams.

Wednesday also stars Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Gwendoline Christie, Hunter Doohan, Percy Hynes White, Joy Sunday, Emma Myers, Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Georgie Farmer, Naomi Ogawa, and Moosa Mostafa. Until recently, Thora Birch was also set to star as a character named Tamara Novak, “Wednesday’s dorm mother and the only ‘normie’ on staff at Nevermore Academy, with a focus on all things botanical.” Birch then left the production for personal reasons before filming was complete. For the moment, it remains unclear how much of her performance – if any at all – will be a part of the show. According to Deadline, “The role will not be recast, with producers looking to add a new character to the show’s first season, I hear. It is unclear whether that character will take over for Tamara and help close out her planned storyline with both of them co-existing on the show or whether the new character will replace Tamara and Birch’s scenes will be reshot.”

Elfman and Burton have presented themselves as a Hollywood dream team for almost 40 years after working on such films as Pee-wee’s Big AdventureBeetlejuiceBatmanEdward Scissorhands, Batman ReturnsThe Nightmare Before ChristmasMars Attacks!, Sleepy Hollow, Planet of the Apes, Big FishCorpse BrideCharlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland, Dark ShadowsFrankenweenieBig Eyes, and Dumbo. Their collaborative efforts are the stuff of legend, and it makes perfect sense that Elfman would join Burton for Netflix’s Wednesday.

What do you think of Danny Elfman joining Burton for his Wednesday Addams series? Do you think the opening theme will sound like the iconic Addams Family theme or will it be something wholly original? What’s your take on Wednesday developing psychic powers in the new series? I suppose it makes sense, given that clairvoyance runs in the family, but it’s still an interesting choice. Let us know what you think in the comments section below. Personally, I can’t wait to hear Danny Elfman’s Wednesday score.
