Weekend Box Office Report: A second time on top for Toy Story 4!

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Woody and Forky are making money!

Everyone's favorite sentient toys spent another weekend in first place at the box office as TOY STORY 4 collected an estimated $57.9 million!

The fourth play session with Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the whole plastic gang lost 52% of business from its opening last week, the largest drop in the series just ahead of the 51% second-week difference of TOY STORY 2 in 1999 (TOY STORY 3 dipped by 46%, while the original TOY STORY was only missing 30% in its second weekend).

The G-rated sequel, with Tom Hanks and Tim Allen again reprising their voice roles as the affable doll duo (joined this time by toy forms of Keanu Reeves, Keegan-Michael KeyJordan Peele and Tony Hale), has a ten-day domestic total of $236.9 million.

Pixar's critically applauded animated feature (holding at a 98% average on Rotten Tomatoes) has a current worldwide total of $496 million, on a reported cost of $200 million.

In second place was the new horror movie ANNABELLE COMES HOME with $20.3 million for the weekend.

The R-rated spinoff of THE CONJURING got a slower start than the previous entries in the haunted doll series, below the $37.1 million first weekend of the original ANNABELLE in 2014 and the $35 million opening of its prequel ANNABELLE: CREATION in 2017.

The latest supernatural thriller revolving around the possessed plaything (and the first ANNABELLE movie to feature THE CONJURING paranormal investigators Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) has a domestic total of $31.2 million since it started spooking audiences on Wednesday.

Directed by ANNABELLE and ANNABELLE: CREATION writer Gary Dauberman in his feature debut, the 70s-set sequel also scared up $45 million from international crowds for a worldwide total of $76.2 million, on a reported cost of $30 million.

Critics found some moderate entertainment among the frights, giving the movie a 70% average on Rotten Tomatoes. Get into the evil spirit with the JoBlo review HERE.

Opening in third place was the new musical YESTERDAY with $17 million.

The PG-13 romantic comedy, about a struggling singer (Himesh Patel) who awakens in a Beatles-free world and then gets famous by playing their music, cost a reported $26 million. The fantasy from director Danny Boyle (SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, TRAINSPOTTING) also strummed its way to $24.7 million worldwide.

The unusual premise didn't totally come together for critics, who gave the movie a 59% average on Rotten Tomatoes. You can work it out with the JoBlo review HERE.

In fourth place was Disney's live-action update of ALADDIN with $9.3 million as Will Smith's passed $300 million domestic during the PG-rated remake's sixth weekend on the top half of the list. The $183 million fantasy musical from director Guy Ritchie now has a worldwide total of $874.2 million.

The PG-rated animated animal sequel THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS 2 heeled in fifth place with $7 million over its fourth weekend. Illumination's $80 million furry follow-up has a domestic total of $131.2 million and a worldwide total of $223 million.

Sci-fi sequel MEN IN BLACK INTERNATIONAL was in sixth place with $6.5 million, bringing the PG-13 Chris Hemsworth/Tessa Thompson comedy to a domestic total of $65 million after three weeks (just over a quarter of the first MEN IN BLACK's $250 million finish) and a worldwide total of $219 million, on a reported $110 million cost.

Marvel's re-release of AVENGERS: ENDGAME snapped into seventh place with $5.5 million as it materialized on 2000 screens for the weekend before Spidey swings into North American theaters.

Even with some post-credits bonus content, the attempt to steal the worldwide box office crown from AVATAR probably won't succeed as James Cameron's extraterrerstrial epic holds at $2.78 billion against the superheroes' new global total of $2.76 billion.

The remake of CHILD'S PLAY fell to eighth place with $4.2 million, sliced by almost 70% from its opening in second place last weekend. The R-rated horror-thriller, with Mark Hamill voicing killer doll Chucky, has a ten-day domestic total of $23.4 million on a reported $10 million cost.

In ninth place was the R-rated musical ROCKETMAN with $3.8 million, giving the $40 million Elton John biopic a domestic total of $84.1 million and a worldwide total of $165.5 million.

At the bottom was R-rated hitman sequel JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 – PARABELLUM with $3.1 million. Keanu Reeves' no-longer-retired assassin has shot his way to $161.3 million domestic and $303.6 million worldwide on the movie's seventh weekend.

Outside the chart, Samuel L. Jackson's SHAFT sequel closed up shop (just as it premiered on Netflix for international viewers), while creature feature GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS stomped out of sight and X-Men sequel DARK PHOENIX fizzled after four weeks (it's at $63.5 million domestic and $244 million worldwide on a cost of $200 million).

And while Peter Parker's costumed alter-ego doesn't crawl onto domestic screens until this upcoming week, SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME opened in some overseas territories for an impressive $111 million (including the third-biggest China debut for Marvel, behind only AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and AVENGERS: ENDGAME).

Next week delivers Tom Holland's web-slinging super-vacation SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME on Tuesday, and HEREDITARY director Ari Aster provides more unsettling horror with MIDSOMMAR on Wednesday.
