Pennywise scares up big bucks!
The sewer-dwelling dancing monster of Derry was back for more frights this weekend and put IT CHAPTER TWO on top of the box office with an estimated opening of $91 million!
The second half of author Stephen King's small-town clown saga didn't quite float to the same level as part one of IT, which started in September of 2017 with a record-setting $123 million before creeping its way to $327 million domestic and $700 million worldwide.
Again directed by Andy Muschetti, the conclusion to the Losers Club's battle with Bill Skarsgard's toothy ancient evil also had international audiences screaming with an extra $94 million for a worldwide weekend of $185 million.
The R-rated sequel, which includes Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy and Bill Hader among the traumatized grown-ups reuniting for the Ritual of Chüd, cost a reported $70 million (double the first movie's budget).
Critics weren't quite as impressed with the finale of the horror epic, giving it a 64% average on Rotten Tomatoes (compared to the 86% average for the first part). You can head down the storm drain to the JoBlo review HERE.
The Gerard Butler sequel ANGEL HAS FALLEN moved to second place with $6 million on its third weekend. The R-rated action-thriller has a domestic total of $53.4 million on a reported $40 million cost.
In third place was the Seth Rogen/Evan Goldberg-produced comedy GOOD BOYS with $5.3 million. The young men's R-rated quest for adult entertainment has a domestic total of $66.8 million and $82.4 million worldwide on its fourth weekend, on a reported $20 million cost.
The remake of Disney's THE LION KING was still roaring in fourth place with $4.1 million, bringing director Jon Favreau's $250 million realistically animated update to a domestic total of $529.1 million and nearly $1.6 billion worldwide after prowling theaters for two months.
In fifth place was the PG-rated faith-based drama OVERCOMER with $3.7 million over its third weekend, for a domestic total of $24.7 million on a reported cost of only $5 million.
The PG-13 action spinoff FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW downshifted to sixth place with $3.7 million. Jason Statham and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's $200 million slobberknocker has slugged it to a domestic total of $164.2 million and a worldwide total of $719 million (with a whopping 77% of overall business earned from overseas).
Hopping onto the list in seventh place was the PG-13 comedy THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON with $2.2 million. Now on 1300 screens, the $6 million tale with Shia LaBeouf, Dakota Johnson and newcomer Zack Gottsagen has a domestic total of $12.2 million after expanding from limited release over the past five weekends.
The PG-13 horror adaptation SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK was in eighth place with $2.2 million, followed closely by more unnerving thrills with READY OR NOT in ninth, also with $2.2 million (the violent wedding night has a domestic total of $25.6 million and $35.5 million worldwide on a reported $6 million cost).
At the bottom was the PG-rated adventure DORA AND THE LOST CITY OF GOLD with $2.1 million as the Nickelodeon cartoon adaptation has reached $54.1 million domestic and $82.3 million worldwide on a $49 reported cost.
Outside the chart, animated sequel THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE 2 was slingshot out of the Top 10 and SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME went swinging away once again after the Marvel superhero briefly crawled back onto the list for its "extended cut" release last weekend.
Quentin Tarantino's R-rated comedy-drama ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD may have driven off the chart last weekend, but has now cruised to $310 million worldwide on a reported cost of $90 million. In limited release, the R-rated Jillian Bell comedy BRITTANY RUNS A MARATHON trotted out to 230 locations for a $1 million weekend.
