Weekend Box Office: Street Fighter scores a solid (if unspectacular) win with $31 million

Last Updated on October 20, 2026

The latest big-budget video game movie, Street Fighter, is off to a solid, if unspectacular, start at the box office. The big-budget adaptation of Capcom’s classic fighting game scored $31 million domestically, which is a shade lower than Mortal Kombat 2 earlier this year (which made $38.5 million). Still, it opened slightly better than we thought, although it’s going to be up to overseas grosses to tell whether or not this is going to turn into a much-needed franchise for Paramount. It made about $20 million internationally, meaning its worldwide start was a fair $51 million.

The big story of the weekend was A24’s You Can See Everything. This Nathan Fielder-led Elizabeth Holmes documentary earned a staggering $15 million from only 855 locations, which is a huge $17.5k per-screen average. Not counting concert films, this is the second-biggest documentary opening of all time, following Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11.

Other Mommy drops sharply but Whalefall struggles

Last weekend’s champ, Other Mommy, saw its box office fall a disastrous 70% for an $8.35 million weekend domestically, but the international box office remained strong, with $9.6 million. The global total sits at $78.8 million, with a finish north of $120 million or so easily within range. Based on the reported mid-teens budget, it will be another nice moneymaker for Blumhouse.

20th Century Studios’ Whalefall turned out to be a bit of a flop, earning only $8 million domestically, although it did better overseas with $9.5 million. Its worldwide total sits at $17.5 million, marking another troubled launch for the studio, which also had a big flop several months ago with The Dog Stars. Disney seems to not really know how to open non-event live-action films these days.

Resident Evil keeps climbing

Focus Features’ Jane Austen adaptation, Sense and Sensibility, made $7.25 million on just over 2,500 screens, which is a solid result these days for a period film. Another book adaptation, Verity, made $6.21 million domestically, bringing its total to just over $66 million. Internationally, it’s scored significant wins, with its worldwide total reaching a hefty $145.3 million.

Resident Evil came in seventh place, with its $5.5 million weekend bringing its domestic total to $148.5 million. Internationally, it’s an even bigger hit, scaring up another $17.1 million, with the worldwide total at $361 million. Is a $500 million finish within sight?

The Brad Pitt-led Heart of the Beast continued to be on solid ground domestically, adding another $4.83 million to bring its domestic total to $58.6 million.

The Social Reckoning and Digger are disasters

The Indian blockbuster Jailer 2, starring one of the region’s biggest stars ever, Rajinikanth, managed to crack the top 10 with $3.25 million and a $5.3 million total. Finally, the chart was rounded out by DreamWorks’ Forgotten Island, with its $2.25 million gross bringing its total to a disastrous $35.1 million.

Another disaster, The Social Reckoning, fell out of the top 10, earning only $1.55 million this weekend, with its domestic total at only $8.28 million. That’s a 69% second-week drop. It was actually beaten by Warner/Clockwork’s re-release of the NC-17 1971 classic The Devils, which made $1.64 million on only 350 screens. The Tom Cruise-led Digger also dropped out of the top 10, losing 71% of it’s audience as many theaters began to dump it. It only make $920k for a $17 million total.

Netflix reports an impressive limited opening for La Bola Negra

Notably, Netflix actually reported some box office figures for the weekend (rare for them), with their well-reviewed (including by us) Oscar contender, La Bola Negra, scoring $277k on only four screens. Its $69.3k per-screen average is the second-highest ever for a non-English-language film.
