Will we get a sequel or a prequel to Neill Blomkamp’s alien romp District 9???

It’s no secret I awarded my favorite genre film of 2009 to Neill Blomkamp’s DISTRICT 9. While I dug the hell out of DRAG ME TO HELL, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3-D, and ORPHAN (which leveled out my top 5) – it was the fully engaging, R-rated effects laden picture, set in South Africa, sans movie stars – that not only had me believing what was shown onscreen, but was utterly outmatched in its ability to disturb me (save for that unholy seduction scene in ORPHAN). Hence the top, baby!

And as open to continuation as the ending of the film left things, it turns out Blomkamp isn’t entirely sure whether to rock a prequel or sequel to his feature length debut.

According to The L.A. Times:

“…A sequel might be interesting. I know what I’m doing next so it wouldn’t be right away. But the concept of aliens in Johannesburg is such an appealing idea to me and the issues of race and how they meet. All of the things that I had going on with it. I wouldn’t mind messing around with it again. I’m open to it if the story works and there’s a reason to do it. And [Copley’s character] Wikus is so funny to me, I’m very interested in a sort of passive racist like that. If you go forward [with his story beyond District 9] it’s more of a traditional film but if you go backward I’d be intrigued in that. I’m not so interested in aliens coming back and blowing things up but [a prequel] might be interesting.”

Wow. And I was sure a DISTRICT 10 was abound. But I do agree, there was something oddly compelling about Wikus and watching him be so charismatically evil.

But for those waiting with bated breath about a follow up film, be it prequel or sequel, should take note that Blomkamp already has another flick in the works. As expected, dude kept rather mum, but had these scant details to offer:

“The setting for the next film takes place 150 years from now. There are two cities that I’m choosing between. They would play as themselves. They are not in South Africa. The success of District 9 has made things a lot easier. I can get other things made.”

Whatever the project is, it’s good to see the dude keep the shite homegrown!

DISTRICT 9 star Sharlto Copley will star alongside Jessica Biel in the new A-TEAM movie!
