Late yesterday afternoon, Microsoft dropped news that the HALO franchise would receive another chapter (in addition to HALO 3) in the form of HALO WARS, an RTS-style game that’s best described as HALO meeting AGE OF EMPIRES. However, the biggest news came in the form of Peter Jackson and his new development company, Wingnut Interactive.
Yes, Peter Jackson, executive producer for the upcoming HALO film, has formed an all-new subdivision of his film production company, Wingnut Films, specifically for game development, and first on the agenda would be an all-new HALO series for the 360! While details for the new series are slim, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s entertainment and devices division Peter Moore stated that the games would make for “amazing interactive entertainment experiences on XBOX 360 and XBOX Live.”
Jackson chimed in saying that the new series would be a new form of entertainment “that’s not a game and it’s not a film. It’s a filmic game experience. I think we’re on a threshold of a new way to tell stories. With that in mind, we discussed a way to do it, and with that in mind, we decided that the first title should be something that will allow us to not have to devise a whole new world but to allow us to tell the story.”
The new games will be codeveloped by Bungie Studios and Wingnut Interactive. In the meantime, Jackson will obviously focusing on the development of the HALO film, which will be directed by South African filmmaker Neill Blomkamp. Weta Digital, the same dudes who did effects for the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, will once again be apart of the Jackson mix. For more on HALO WARS, click here for the announcement.
