With the arrival of Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey in Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, superhero shenanigans are back in vogue, as the future of the X-Men franchise looks brighter than ever. As Spidey’s latest live-action adventure continues to print money with an astonishing $1.3 billion in worldwide ticket sales after its July 31 release, fans are clamoring for any news about where Marvel’s going next with its beloved mutants. According to Collider, Marvel is hard at work on future seasons of its acclaimed animated series X-Men ’97, and we now know when both will arrive on Disney+.
Release Windows Confirmed for Seasons 3 & 4
During an interview with Marvel Studios Head of TV and Streaming Brad Winderbaum, Collider’s Maggie Lovitt asked how long we’d need to wait for Season 3. Instead of keeping details close to the vest, which is par for the course regarding Marvel-related anything, Winderbaum quickly answered, “Season 3 is going to come out next year and Season 4 the year after that,” confirming that Seasons 3 and 4 will premiere in 2027 and 2028, respectively.
Winderbaum says that while waiting a year for new episodes might feel like an eternity, it’s not. Back in my day, we relied on reruns to sate our hunger for mutant-related mayhem, and the first two seasons of X-Men ’97 aren’t going anywhere any time soon. You could easily watch the existing episodes again, as X-Men ’97 is rather dense, and you’ll likely catch new details on a second or third watch. According to Winderbaum, he wants to make “as many [seasons] as fast as possible for people to see.” He’s not sure how many episodes will be included in Seasons 3 and 4, so we’ll need to wait and see.
Our Take on X-Men ’97 Season 2
“The opening salvo of the show feels more dramatic, mature, and compelling than anything that came before. It’s an outstanding revival of something that could have easily fallen apart. The show feels like Marvel made it in the mid-90s, but reads like a modern, more mature X-Men story. We get a decent amount of action this season, but for me, it’s all about the stakes. At some point, you begin to ask yourself philosophical questions about who the leaders of the X-Men are and why they think their actions are the righteous path. It’s a battle for self-preservation as they continue living in a world that doesn’t want them. Compelling stuff, really. I can’t wait to see the remaining episodes of the new season. If they’re any bit as good as the first four, we’re in for a hell of a good time.”
