Y: The Last Man might finally movie forward at New Line Cinema

Brian K. Vaughan’s classic graphic novel Y: THE LAST MAN has struggled to effectively find its way to the big screen. The project has seen directors come and go (DJ Caruso and Louis Leterrier among them), had a star attached (Shia Labeouf) only to watch him depart, and looked to be permanently stuck in development hell as of November 2010. But there might be hope for the last man on earth yet…

According to NY Magazine’s Vulture blog, New Line Cinema is very pleased with the latest screenplay draft, which comes from former “Jericho” writers Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia. In fact, the blog states that New Line is already in discussions with candidates for the director’s chair. (No names given, unfortunately; presumably Caruso and Leterrier are still out.)

Written by Brian K. Vaughan (Lost, PRIDE OF BAGHDAD, EX MACHINA) and with art by Pia Guerra, Y: THE LAST MAN is the saga of Yorick Brown—the only human survivor of a planet-wide plague that instantly kills every mammal possessing a Y chromosome. Accompanied by a mysterious government agent, a brilliant young geneticist and his pet monkey, Ampersand, Yorick travels the world in search of his lost love and the answer to why he’s the last man on earth.
