Over the last five years, we’ve seen multiple Yellowstone prequels and spinoffs, but one previously announced project won’t be happening, and that comes from franchise creator Taylor Sheridan himself.
6666 Isn’t Happening
When the flagship series was still in the midst of its run, Paramount announced development on 6666, a Yellowstone spinoff that would have taken place at the real-life Texas ranch. Many of the other spinoffs that were announced at the same time, including 1883, have already aired, but there’s been little to no movement on 6666.
While speaking on the Rodeo Time podcast, Sheridan says the 6666 series is dead and that he didn’t plan on doing it anyway. “There’s never going to be one; I would never fictionalize that ranch,” Sheridan said. “People thought that that was going to be a thing, but I would never do that.” Sheridan is a part-owner of the real 6666 Ranch, and he added that he doesn’t want to be “inventing a drama” at an active ranch.
“So now I’m trivializing and fictionalizing something where real people work, and they raise their families there, and I could never do that to them,” he explained. “I could never do that to the cowboys that dedicated themselves, and everybody that works on that ranch. I’m very protective of the Sixes, and it’s a big responsibility to be the person who has to protect that ranch, so I have to be very, very careful with it.“
During the fourth season of Yellowstone, Jimmy Hurdstrom (Jefferson White) was sent to work at the 6666 ranch. “I’ve actually got on my computer all the scenes of Jimmy at the 6666 pulled out and strung together, and it makes its own perfect little movie,” Sheridan said. “You watch him go there as this misfit, and leave as a man and a respected cowboy.“
The Yellowstone Franchise
Although 6666 won’t be happening, Yellowstone has still expanded in ways I never foresaw. We’ve seen two prequels, 1883 and 1923, as well as two other spinoffs: Y: Marshals, with Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, and Dutton Ranch, with Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler.
The Madison was originally intended to be a Yellowstone spinoff as well, but Paramount+ later announced it would be a standalone series.
