Zach Galifianakis is attached to star as the famed literary hero Ignatius J. Reilly in an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning book A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES. The role has previously been courted by the likes of John Belushi, John Candy, and Chris Farley, all of which were stopped short due to a case of death.
Sources say that director James Bobin (THE MUPPETS) is in negotiations to helm the pic from a script by Phil Johnston (CEDAR RAPIDS, NEBRASKA).
Here’s a brief synopsis of the book:
The story is set in New Orleans in the early 1960s. The central character is Ignatius J. Reilly, an educated but slothful 30-year-old man still living with his mother in the city’s Uptown neighborhood, who, due to an incident early in the book, must set out to get a job. In his quest for employment he has various adventures with colorful French Quarter characters.
I am ashamed that I haven’t read this, as I’ve heard of it frequently throughout the years. However, with this news, I actually downloaded it to my kindle and plan to get caught up. I’m a fan of Galifianakis and this seems like a role he was born to play. Bobin’s involvement with HBO’s Flight of the Conchords and Da Ali G Show are what make him a great choice to handle this as well. All in all, this feels like it could be a hell of a movie and I’m immediately reminded of a Terry Giliam-esque type of film, which is pretty awesome.
What do you think? Do you have a better creative team in mind or does this fall in line with what you’d hope to see?
