Robert Zemeckis seems to have lost interest in humans — at least in the finished product. The filmmaker is planning to continue his trend of “performance capture” animation with a new version of YELLOW SUBMARINE for Disney.
The Beatles appeared in ‘toon form in the trippy 1968 original, in which they were tasked with using their music (and various psychedelic imagery) to save Pepperland from the villainous Blue Meanies.
Assuming the music and other rights are ultimately disentangled, Zemeckis will do a digital 3D update with all applicable Fab Four classics like “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds,” “Eleanor Rigby,” “Nowhere Man”, “When I’m Sixty-Four” and “With a Little Help From My Friends” (plus the title track, yeah). With luck he’ll bring back that freaky evil flying glove, too. Although the ‘G’ isn’t necessary — all you need is love.
Zemeckis will next provide chills (intended or otherwise) with his performance-captured holiday classic A CHRISMAS CAROL.
