High Fidelity: Zoe Kravitz says canceling the Hulu series after one season was a mistake

Zoe Kravitz, High Fidelity, Hulu, one season, canceled

Zoe Kravitz is speaking out against the cancellation of her 2020 Hulu series, High Fidelity. The series was a relevant and smart take on the 2000 film, which in turn was adapted from the 1995 British novel of the same name by Nick Hornby.

During a recent chat with “Elle” magazine, Kravitz revealed that the cancellation not only disappointed her and the rest of the cast but also the numerous amount of fans that connected with its well-written characters. Here is what Kravitz had to say:

“They [Hulu] didn’t realize what that show was and what it could do…The amount of letters, DMs, people on the street, and women that look like us—like, that love for the show, it meant something to people. It was a big mistake.”

The original High Fidelity starred John Cusack as Rob, a record store owner, and compulsive list maker that recounts his top five breakups, including the one already in progress. The film also featured Lisa Bonet, the mother of Kravtiz herself. On the series, the show offered up a gender-swapped update that had Kravitz playing Rob, an indie record-store owner in New York City with an encyclopedic knowledge of music, but not so much expertise when it comes to men and romance. The series was whip-smart and was drenched in pop-culture references, great music, and complex characters that embodied the struggles of young adulthood. As far as being a show adapted from a fan-favorite film, High Fidelity stood on its own. Unfortunately, Hulu canceled the show after only one season in August 2020.

When the series was first canceled, Kravtiz let it be known back then that High Fidelity was one of the only shows on Hulu centered around a woman of color and that its cancellation represented a sad irony. At the time the cancellation was announced, Hulu said the decision “was not easy and came after lengthy deliberations, per Deadline. A specific reason was never really given but I imagine it was down to viewership. Nevertheless, it was a show that ended up being gone way too soon because it certainly had more life left in it.

Do YOU think it was a mistake to cancel High Fidelity so soon?
