With the insane levels of marketing saturation for THE DARK KNIGHT, another upcoming Batman movie seems to be getting overlooked, namely BATMAN: GOTHAM KNIGHT.

Wizard's 2008 movie preview has a few details, informing salivating Batfans that the "movie" will actually be a collection of six stories from different writers, directed by Bruce Timm (BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES). The new stories, done in anime style by three Japanese studios, will apparently bridge the gap between BATMAN BEGINS and THE DARK KNIGHT and explore "different facets of Batman often seen in comics but never really explored in animation and film." The stories will link together thematically but also be independent, each with a different appearance, particularly in regards to Bruce Wayne and his nocturnal alter ego.

The writers include comic scribes Brian Azzarello and Greg Rucka and BATMAN BEGINS screenwriter David Goyer, and the animation studios (Production I.G., Studio 4C and Madhouse) have been responsible for work like STEAMBOY, GHOST IN THE SHELL and NINJA SCROLL. It's believed that Christian Bale will provide his voice to the project. The DVD is expected to hit shelves sometime before THE DARK KNIGHT's July release.

Extra Tidbit: Rumor has it that anime director Satoshi Kon (PAPRIKA, PERFECT BLUE) may also be directing one of the segments.

I'm hip. The way they're describing it sounds pretty cool. Production I.G. did some fantastic work on Kill Bill and I expect them to do the same.

sounds great!!!

I still watch the animated series every night on toon disney(only channel it comes on guys) at like 10:30 at night. Still love Danny Elfman's openeng and the shows score itself none of this elctro/techno shit newer ones have had.

I hope this project delivers sleek animation which it looks like it will with who's involved.

I've always, ALWAYS wanted to see a Batman anime. With Bruce Timm aboard AND studios like Production I.G., this should be nothing short of incredible. I'm stoked. And as others said, if Satoshi Kon is involved...OH BOY.

I thought Begins led pretty much straight into Dark Knight... I am curious how much they have to work with in so little of a timespan. I kind of wish this was its own separate entity.

I miss The Animated Series... lets get that shit back

Satoshi Kon!
If Kon does one, I'll FLIP OUT. These are the best of the best in Production Houses. Warners is taking the Animatrix to the next level here. Having Bale on board makes it a must buy.

RE: mutesaint
i TOTALLY agree. i would love to see satoshi kon take on the batman universe. it would truely be fucked up (in a good way)! especially if we're dealing with joker stories. satoshi kon + joker = infinitely crazy possiblities. Also, as mentioned earlier by robstar, having shinichiro watanabe direct one of the stories would be an otaku's wet dream.

great studios btw.

Bruce Timm's involved!?
That's all I needed to hear, I think I may be anticipating this more than TDK now!

As stated before this sounds a lot like The Animatrix, but without sucking. Very cool. If the Matrix did anything right, it was show how to incorporate your franchise into a through-and-through experience...I'm glad they're doing that with the new Batman films. It's never felt so good to be nerdy...

Maybe if we pray enough they'll dedicate a whole segment to The Joker and...maybe...

We'll see
Batman in anime seems about as odd as G.I. Joe in the style... But I knew Bruce Timm was involved from the start, and I trust his judgement... I also liked most of The Animatrix, so we'll see.

*cringes at the thought of long-winded, hardly animated dialogue*

Let Shinichiro Watanabe do an ep!
The director of Cowboy Bebop would be the perfect cnoice to helm an ep. Hes aready got some animatrix stuff under his belt too.

"Batmanime", lol, very clever. I am very intrigued by this concept and hope that they're great. But they better not have story elements in Dark Knight from them, because that will be too confusing for the average movie goer who would not watch this.

With the level of talent that they are saying is involved with this project, I can't help but be excited. It sounds a lot like the Animatrix, which rocked. Of course, the Matrix flicks started sucking after the Animatrix, so let's hope the trend doesn't continue.
