Franco as Jack Ryan? Aug. 18, 2008
Source: CHUD
by: Mike Sampson

Sam Raimi is working to get the Jack Ryan franchise off the ground and relaunched but replacing Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin and Ben Affleck is proving difficult (OK, replacing Affleck shouldn't be too hard). CHUD has some interesting scoop on who Raimi wants, who Sony doesn't want and what it might mean for the franchise.

They report that Raimi wants to cast his SPIDER-MAN star James Franco as Jack Ryan but the Paramount execs aren't ready yet to hand over a big franchise like this to Franco. This is reportedly causing a major rift between Raimi and Paramount and may wind up causing the director to walk off the project. Personally I think Franco's a great choice for an action star if someone would give him the chance. He'd need to bulk up a bit I suppose but if Matt Damon (Matt Damon!) can become one of the biggest action stars courtesy the BOURNE franchise, why not Franco? All interesting things to keep an eye on...

Extra Tidbit: Franco wears a prosthetic schlong in the upcoming drama MILK.

Agree, Casey Affleck would be a better choice, but in all honesty, I'm ready for the franchise to die.

What ever happened to casting old guys for the roles. Granted Baldwin wasn't very old, but the moment Jack Ryan turned gray-haired and fifty people should've sat up and taken notice. Since Harrison Ford is the most commonly associated face with the character, making the guy thirty again might be a stretch, and since it apparently yielded inferior results, it shouldn't be duplicated, IMO. I'm thinking someone like George Clooney, only NOT George Clooney.

I dig James Franco and I dig Jack Ryan but never the twain shall meet you know?

It's only bcause Pineapple Express was such a success. Fuck Sam Raimi, I hate that kind of Seth Rogan/Jonah Hill casting.

It's not even that good anyway. Him as Jack Ryan? Ben Affleck was a bad enough move.

HEY ANAMOLY7
Good call on casey Affleck.

He was all kinds of badass in Gone Baby gone. Which is hard to pull off when your sooo skinny.

But Franco could do it too.

I'm assuming they are going ahead with a prequel story that was mentioned a few months back, in which case Franco would be the right age. Franco would probably be good, but after this past year, I thought Casey Affleck would be a perfect fit for the role. Plus, his brother already played one version of Ryan, so it would be an easy transition for the audience. Which leads me to my second pick: Stephen Baldwin.

(just kidding about that last part).

i would agree with some of the people on here that say Ryan Gosling before Franco, but Franco is a really good actor and i can see him as a young Jack Ryan, why not.

Franco as Jack Ryan? Sure, I could see that working. Sony is probably nervous after seeing "Pineapple Express" take a nose-dive in it's 2nd week.

Wait, why the fuck is Rami "working to get the Jack Ryan franchise off the ground and relaunched" anyway?

WHA?
Franco sucks in general and only marginally good, in some cases. No thank you.
