Will Tom Cruise take the lead in Doug Liman’s We Mortals Are?

Last Updated on July 23, 2021

First it was Ryan Gosling. Then, Brad Pitt. Now another heavy-hitting Hollywood leading man’s name is being bandied about for Doug Liman’s futuristic trip ALL YOU NEED IS KILL, and that name is Tom Cruise. Yes, Xenu’s favorite disciple is still an above-title player, as hard as it may be to believe…

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Cruise is talking to Warner Bros. about playing the lead role in Liman’s film, which is sort of like SOURCE CODE with aliens. Based on the 2004 Japanese novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, the story is told from the first person point of view of the protagonist Keiji Kiriya. Keiji is a new recruit in the United Defense Force, fighting against the mysterious creatures called ‘Mimics’ which have laid siege to Earth. Keiji is killed on his first sortie, but through some inexplicable phenomenon wakes up having returned to the day before the battle, only to find himself caught in a time loop as his death and resurrection repeats time and time again. Keiji’s skills as a soldier grows as he passes through the time loops trying to change his fate.

It was less than a month ago that Pitt’s name came up for ALL YOU NEED IS KILL, although of course it was just “talk”, as this is. Gosling’s name was mentioned back in November of last year, but obviously the young actor has his hands full currently with no less than two Nicolas Winding Refn films.

No matter who ends up taking the lead, one positive piece of info has emerged from the fray: That awful title appears to be history. However, the new title is WE MORTALS ARE, and frankly, that’s not a whole lot better… But I’ll take it over the former, don’t know about you…

We’ll keep you in the loop as the film tries to lock down its lead.
