You know zombies are a hit when Disney green-lights Zombies and Cheerleaders

A zombie cheerleader musical? From Disney? Man, if you didn’t think one of our favorite forms of the undead were already played out…it’s official: reanimated corpses have gone mainstream!

Variety has it that Disney just green-lit a pilot for a musical number called “Zombies and Cheerleaders,” with Todd Strauss Schulson directing from a script by Joseph Raso and David Light (who will also exec-produce). Plan is to have the show air on cable sometime in 2012.

Here’s the setup:

“Zombies and Cheerleaders” tells the tale of Zed Necrodopolis, a high-school student who happens to be a zombie but is desirous of ingratiating himself with the popular cheerleading clique.

Pretty cute I suppose. I’m sort of imaging a BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER vibe, obviously with zombies instead of Pee Wee Herman in a really off-putting goatee. Wait, Pee Wee’s back on Broadway, so maybe he snags a cameo in this thing. I’d watch that!

What about you? Is “Zombies and Cheerleaders” the kind of mash-up you’ve been longing for?
