Living Ninja Turtles? Sep. 2, 2008

Source: Coming Soon

Those famous half-shell heroes certainly have made the media rounds -- from comic book to videogames, action figures, live-action feature, cartoon series, CG-animation, and now... back to live-action?

That would seem to be the case, according to TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES co-creator Kevin Eastman. While the recent (and surprisingly enjoyable) computer-animated flick was popular enough to make a sequel possible, Eastman recently posted on the Heavy Metal forums: "There has been much talk between Imagi and Warners to do a better "re-invention" (newest Hollywood buzzword) of the TMNT's, in a live action film--like what was done with Batman. Back to basics, back to the origin and the intro of the Shredder, etc...there have been talks, trips to Northampton to talk to [TMNT co-creator] Mr Laird, and discussions with the original "first" TMNT film director Steve Barron to come back and do it right--but no official word yet...will keep you posted."

It looks like those formerly fun-loving, toxically enhanced pet store refugee martial artists are "going dark", one of the inevitable downsides of THE DARK KNIGHT's massive profitability (Warner Bros. reportedly plans to take the same brooding direction with all their DC superhero movies).

Then again, I believe Eastman no longer holds any legal or financial rights to the TMNT property, so he could just be repeating rumors...

Extra Tidbit: Eastman owns HEAVY METAL magazine and is producing a new animated movie with David Fincher -- but apparently no longer at Paramount, who is wrestling with the filmmaker over BENJAMIN BUTTON.

I want an origin like te original comics. Start it off in Japan and show Yamato Yoshi and Saki begin their feud. Basically a live action version of the first few cartoon episodes, but make it darker, PG-13 would be fine. go through the TRUE origins, not that stupid shit from the movie (Splinter was already a super smart rat, before the ooz?? so stupid). Add in Baxter stockman, Id love to see the tecnodrome with some great CG, some mousers and some Casey Jones and you got yourself a fucking awesome movie.

A couple of other sites are saying this is all just rumor after all. According to the screenwriter of TMNT, Eastman doesn't know what he's talking about, there's going to be another film but at this point it will in fact be a CGI sequel to the previous film.

Damn, Ghostbusters and Ninja Turtles all in the same week. I knew it was too good to be true.

Good Idea only f they eliminate all the stupid alien crap and monsters and just take it back to the original movie style where it was gritty as hell and grimey. It can be grounded in our reality to be as believable as possible and make it meaningful. I say let Donnie Yen work on the fights and Del Toro Maybe on the Directing if he stays clear of excessive CGI. Go back to the old ways of visual effects and creature models when that shit looked more realistic like hoe TDK did.

To repeat Solomon, since everyone seems to forget so easily - the original ninja turtles comic was fucking violent.

So I'd say this is good news.

The turtles started as an indie comic in the mid 80's and it wasn't written for kids, it was a dark satire of other popular titles of the time (especially Daredevil and Ronin), and was very much targeted to the college crowd.

How dark were the comics? In an early issue Raphael tried to kill Leonardo; when the turtles finally confront Shredder they don't just defeat him they decapitate him. However there was also a cynical humour that ran through the series.

I agree with Dave that Warner Bros. is gravely mistaken if they think "dark and realistic" is the way to go with all their comicbook pictures, however it would fit for the original concept of TMNT.

Should it be as dark and gritty as TDK? Probably not, these are anthroporphic turtles after all and if the film tries to take itself TOO seriously it'll be a disaster. That being said if there's one thing we've learned from this year's summer season its that comic films work best when they're in the hands of those who have resepct for the source material and take their responsibility to the fans seriously. Its worked for Hellboy which is an almost equally outlandish series so I don't see why it couln't work for the Turtles as long as they get the right people involved.

Best movie news i've heard in a while. A darker take on the turtles would be great, since I thought the cartoon was a bit to childish. Good for young kids, but not the fans who grew up with the series and live-action movies several years ago. As long as its not to CGI, and it looks like the old turtles movies or hellboy 2, i'm definitely in.

An overall darker story and feel would be appropriate if they go off the original material. The original comic series wasn't exactly bright and happy.

This would be fantastic... The first film had that darkness that every child (and subsequently the grown adults of today) loved years ago! To have the original director would be a huge step in the right direction... Just make sure you do first film animatronics or better... How do you get WORSE as the series goes on? Confusing... Make it bad ass, and appealing to the original fan base and you have a HIT on your hands!

Don't have a problem with live action coming back but I don't want to hear any of that "IT SHOULD BE R" crap.

I would have liked to see a sequel to TMNT. They teased that Shredder was coming back anyway.
