Yesterday, while screening a portion of footage from MADAGASCAR: ESCAPE 2 AFRICA, DreamWorks Animation guru Jeffrey Katzenberg says he sees more sequels in his studio’s future. He envisions MADAGASCAR as the “second chapter” in one larger story and that ultimately the audience needs to see the animals make it back to New York. In addition, DWA is also in talks for a sequel to KUNG FU PANDA, which has already grossed over $210 million and is neck-and-neck with WALL-E for the biggest animated movie of the summer. Personally I’d much rather see the return of Po and the KUNG FU PANDA crew than anything more with MADAGASCAR. I mean the first film was OK but it really didn’t need a sequel. That said, DWA seems very happy to sequelize their movies (SHREK is working on its fourth installment now) so I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a SHARK TALE 2 one day (I can’t believe I just said that). Both MADAGASCAR 3 and KUNG FU PANDA 2 would be in 3-D and I saw some test footage of KUNG FU PANDA in 3-D and it was incredible. The fight scenes really lend themselves to 3-D and that would be a real treat for kids. Other movies DWA has on the way include MONSTERS VS. ALIENS, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON and MASTER MIND.
